march projects

i'd like to record my ongoing creative endeavors- not necessarily for anyone else; i have yet to even share this blog. documenting my progress with my work can (in theory) help me to hold myself accountable: in finishing what i start, in learning and growing in my skills, and in remembering that i'm only my true self when i'm creating.

my hope is to keep track of my work and post consistently, but i'll start by cataloguing recent work to get things up to speed.

i left my job at the end of february and decided to take some time off from job searching while i'm receiving intensive treatment for my mental health. it's easy to melt into my bed and netflix when i don't have something to fill up my time so i've tried to keep my hands busy. (i usually still end up crafting in bed while watching junk tv, but at least the crafting part makes me feel like a Person.)

paul and his brother rob play dungeons and dragons in our living room with their friends. they record each session and release them as podcasts. it's pretty cool, but i don't like to be around when they're recording because i feel like i have to walk on eggshells and not make any noise. one week i had nowhere to go so i locked myself in our room with a bottle of wine and some tattoo supplies and ended up with this little moth on my arm.

i bought myself a sewing machine around my birthday in february. my previous machine was a hand me down that never did much for me. i hadn't sewn in a while so my stash wasn't huge and my skills were less than ideal but i started with what i had- mostly thrifted fabrics and ill fitting clothes i couldn't resist even when i had no idea what to do with them.

outfit details: vintage camisole- thrifted; necklace- homemade; high rise jeans- forever 21.

outfit details: lipstick- NYX wicked lippies in risque; crop top- fennec design co on etsy
i started with a couple of simple cover ups. (the internet is calling them "kimonos" but 1. these are not traditional kimonos and 2. if they were i would not make or wear them as a white person. but that's a different story.) the top is made from a sheer linen found at salvation army. i haven't worn it because i decided it was too long to be functional but can't be bothered to do anything about it. the bottom is a shorter design made from a skirt i saw at savers with an amazing print and a waistline i would never squeeze into.

i've tried a little bit to get used to the free form foot that came with the machine. i learned right away that a hoop was necessary, but i have a feeling this foot and i will become very close friends.

next i went through a weaving phase. i've always had a thing for textiles but my only experience weaving was with a cardboard loom in middle school. not much had changed- i still had nothing but cardboard. but i did have a decent stash of yarn scraps and an understanding of tension and yarn behavior. i also had the internet for inspiration and tips.

i made all 5 of these in the same week and i haven't made any since. it comes in waves.

i also found flowers in my therapist's trash can that week and took them home with me.

til next time.
